The Government has unveiled a significant boost for housing in Essex with a £1.8 million grant to support three housing schemes. These developments are set to transform local authority-owned brownfield land in Basildon and Chelmsford.
The selected sites for this funding injection are:
- Former Post Office Block, Basildon
- Markhams Chase, Basildon
- Granary Car Park, Chelmsford
Collectively, these projects will result in the construction of 134 homes, with an emphasis on affordability as 80 of them will be designated as affordable housing units.
This latest announcement reflects the ongoing success of the Greater Essex One Public Estate partnership, which has consistently secured funding for vital projects. Just last November, the partnership secured a substantial £3.4 million for initiatives in Basildon, Colchester, and Tendring.
Over the past three years, the partnership has amassed more than £7 million, a testament to its commitment to facilitating local authority-led housing initiatives. These projects are revitalizing brownfield sites, enhancing the quality of housing in the region.
“This grant is a significant step towards addressing housing needs in our communities. The funding will enable the development of new homes, including affordable options, on brownfield land, promoting sustainable growth and providing opportunities for those in need.”
Said John Smith, Chair of Essex County Council.
