Brentwood :Police Charge Woman with 24 Fraud Offences

The Metropolitan Police’s Economic Crime Unit has charged a woman with 24 offences following an extensive investigation. The inquiry was initiated after several reports emerged of a woman visiting various Vodafone stores between April and December 2023, using counterfeit identifications to illicitly acquire contracts and iPhones.

The breakthrough came on 6 December 2023 when suspicious activity was reported at a Vodafone store in Brentwood, leading to an arrest. By Monday, 4 March, Akanise Saukawa, 42, of Wickham Lane, London, faced charges including 11 counts of fraud by false representation, 11 counts of possession of articles for use in fraud, and two counts of possession of counterfeit passports and bank cards.Saukawa has been remanded in custody and is set to appear at Bromley Magistrates Court on 5 March.

Det Sgt Rachel Barrett of the Metropolitan Police highlighted the significance of the charges:

“These charges form part of a large investigation, where it’s estimated that Vodafone lost out on around £10,000. Our Economic Investigation Team continues to work closely with businesses and Action Fraud to investigate those attempting to gain financially through criminal activities.”

This case underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to clamp down on financial crimes and protect businesses from fraudulent activities.
