Courtroom to Cuffs: Driver Busted Driving Minutes After Being Banned

A newly disqualified driver found himself banned a second time in a striking case of disregard for court orders. Can Koroglu of Copthall Green, Waltham Abbey, faced magistrates at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 13 June, where he was initially disqualified from driving for six months. The decision came after he was found guilty of driving without insurance, compounded by accumulating penalties under the “totting up” rule, which mandates immediate disqualification for drivers who exceed a certain number of penalty points.

Despite being explicitly informed of the immediate effect of his disqualification, Koroglu audaciously drove away from the court. His actions set off a swift response from law enforcement. Alerted to the violation, Roads Policing officers and the Epping Forest Town Centre Team collaborated closely, culminating in Koroglu’s interception just short of his residence, less than an hour after his court appearance.

He was detained and appeared in court the very next day, Friday, 14 June, facing charges of driving while disqualified. The court responded with a firmer hand this time, issuing a 10-week custodial sentence, suspended for 12 months, and extending his driving ban to 18 months—three times the length of the original ban. Additionally, he was ordered to pay over £200 in fines and costs.

Mr. Adam Pipe, Head of Essex Roads Policing, shed light on the broader issue:

“Unfortunately, this is quite a regular occurrence. Despite the fact that drivers facing a potential ban are clearly warned in advance that any ban takes immediate effect, many still attend the hearing having driven there. And some also take the chance of driving home. This case shows how Essex Police teams successfully work together to ensure road safety across the county.”

This incident not only highlights the challenges law enforcement faces with individuals who blatantly disregard court orders, but it also stresses the critical need for robust enforcement and awareness campaigns. Ensuring that drivers understand the severe consequences of ignoring driving bans is vital for road safety. The proactive approach of Essex Police serves as a deterrent and a reminder that road safety rules are not mere suggestions but essential laws that protect all road users.
