As the Christmas shopping season ramps up, Essex County Fire and Rescue Service (ECFRS) is cautioning Essex shoppers about the risks associated with purchasing items online, especially during high discount periods like Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Amid the rush for bargains, the allure of low-cost electrical products can be strong, but ECFRS warns that these items could pose serious fire safety risks if they are counterfeit.
Counterfeit or substandard electrical goods frequently fail to comply with UK safety standards, significantly increasing the likelihood of overheating or malfunctions that can lead to household fires.
Safety Tips from ECFRS:
- Choose Trusted Sellers: Opt for well-known retailers or verified brands, and steer clear of deals that appear too good to be true.
- Verify Safety Marks: Ensure the item carries the UKCA or CE mark, indicating compliance with required safety standards.
- Check for Warnings and Instructions: Counterfeit items often lack proper safety warnings and clear instructions—a red flag for shoppers.
“Andrea MacAlister, Head of Prevention at ECFRS, emphasises the importance of diligence in online shopping: ‘We want everyone to enjoy a safe and joyful Christmas season. Taking a moment to verify the source and authenticity of an item can significantly diminish the risk of electrical fires at home. Inexpensive or untested products might seem like a bargain at first, but they can lead to catastrophic outcomes.'”
“MacAlister further advised, ‘We recommend purchasing electrical items only from reputable retailers. Platforms like eBay and Amazon might offer products that seem legitimate and safe, but the risk of counterfeits is high. Always look for the UKCA or CE mark on electrical goods, which not only ensures safety compliance but also provides recourse in case of defects.'”
