Ship Fire at Tilbury Docks

Firefighters from Essex Fire and Rescue have successfully extinguished a large fire on a ship docked at Tilbury Docks ( 06 December 2023 ).

Six fire crews swiftly responded to the emergency call, arriving at the scene at 5:43 pm. Upon their arrival, they reported that a substantial quantity of approximately 5,000 tonnes of scrap metal was ablaze aboard the ship.

The fire was effectively contained within the ship’s hold, and firefighters worked in collaboration with the ship’s crew and site personnel to safely remove the burning metal from the hold and extinguish the fire in sections.

As of now, the fire has been successfully extinguished, and while the immediate threat is over, two fire crews will remain on-site to monitor for any potential hotspots and ensure the area is adequately cooled down.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, and investigations will be conducted to determine its origin.

Group Manager Mark Eaglestone expressed his gratitude, saying: “A big thank you to the ship’s crew and site staff who remained on the scene, helping us to extinguish this fire as quickly as possible.”
