New £1.75 Million Grant Fund for Unpaid Carers Launches in Essex

A new grant programme has been launched in Essex, allocating £1.75 million to support unpaid carers of all ages through local projects.

While there are already an estimated 124,000 unpaid carers in Essex, it is believed that the actual number may be even higher.

Unpaid carers play a crucial role in helping family and friends maintain their independence. However, many unpaid carers may not be aware of the available support because they see it as their duty to assist relatives, friends, and neighbors.

The Carers Community Fund, funded by the Councils’ Better Care Fund Allocation, aims to establish localised community-based support for these dedicated carers.

Eligible groups and organisations will have the opportunity to apply for grants ranging from £1,000 to £30,000.

Applications for the grants opened on November 28 and will close on January 30, 2024.

Applicants are encouraged to showcase innovation and an inclusive approach to supporting carers within their communities.

Councillor John Spence, Cabinet Member for Health, Adult Social Care and ICS Integration, stated: “Our new carers’ strategy for Essex is aimed at ensuring high-quality information, guidance, and advice so that carers know their rights and feel well supported. Grants from this fund will particularly help the latter, as local organizations and charities will be able to identify the projects that will best enhance the lives of carers in their part of Essex.”

If you are an unpaid carer, support is available. Unpaid carers also have certain rights, and a new campaign has been launched to raise awareness of these rights.
