In a significant update, GMB, the union representing Asda colleagues, has decided to postpone the planned strike at the Gosport superstore to Friday, January 19. Originally scheduled to commence on January 12, the strike action was initially pushed back to January 15 to facilitate discussions between GMB and Asda, chaired by ACAS.
During these talks, GMB presented its position, and Asda has requested another meeting on Thursday, January 18, to respond to these proposals. As a result, the union has chosen to suspend the strike action that was previously set for January 15, 16, 17, and 18.
Nicola Nixon, GMB Regional Organiser, emphasized:
“GMB have agreed to further push back the strike action at Asda’s Gosport Superstore in a show of good faith following talks with the employer yesterday. We are being very clear though that if sufficient progress hasn’t taken place in the meantime and Asda haven’t used this week wisely, our members will be out on strike beginning next Friday. Asda top brass may be distracted by what’s going on at the Select Committee [1] but that doesn’t mean they can ignore what is happening at a store-level in Gosport. Our members are bang up for this struggle and we will only delay this strike for so long.”
The decision to postpone the strike reflects GMB’s willingness to engage in constructive negotiations while keeping the option of industrial action open if necessary. The outcome of the talks scheduled for January 18 will play a crucial role in determining the future course of action.
Stay tuned for updates as the situation develops.
