Colleagues at the Gosport Superstore of Asda are set to go on strike following a historic vote by GMB members in favor of industrial action.

This strike marks a significant moment as it will be the first of its kind at any Asda supermarket in the UK.

The dispute revolves around concerns raised by the members regarding their treatment by management. This includes wage errors and health and safety issues, leading to what GMB is characterizing as a ‘toxic’ work culture.

The strike is scheduled to commence on Friday, January 12, 2024, and is currently planned to continue until Sunday, January 26, with the possibility of further days of strike action.

Nicola Nixon, GMB Regional Organiser, emphasized, “To my knowledge, no ASDA store has been balloted for strike action before, so this is historic for these members who have been brave enough to stand up and say ‘enough is enough’.”

Nixon continued, “The strike action is a cry for help from these hard-working colleagues who contribute to bringing Christmas to families throughout the surrounding area. Asda management still have time to prevent this strike. If they don’t want store operations to come to a halt in January, they need to meet with us and engage in meaningful negotiations, unlike the five previous times we have met for futile and unproductive talks.”
