Set to open on 1 March 2024, the Greenstead Community Supermarket aims to alleviate the strain of rising food bills by offering discounted groceries and household items to locals. Residents with a Colchester postcode can gain membership for a nominal fee, enabling weekly shopping visits between Thursday and Saturday, from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm.
Managed by Divine Assembly Ministries, the supermarket extends the church’s community support further into tangible aid. As Essex County Council’s seventh community supermarket initiative, it follows successful launches in Jaywick, Basildon, Chelmsford, Canvey Island, and Harlow, contributing to county-wide efforts to level up community support.
Cllr Louise McKinlay highlighted the dual role of these supermarkets as both essential supply points and community hubs, noting the positive feedback from other Essex locations and the forthcoming expansion of the initiative.
Elizabeth Akinyemi of Divine Assembly Ministries emphasized the pressing need for such services amid soaring living costs. She encourages local residents to visit, engage, and benefit from the supportive environment the supermarket promises.
Colchester’s city officials, Cllr Alison Jay and Cllr Natalie Sommers, echoed the sentiment, underlining the supermarket’s dual benefits of financial relief and community bonding. They stressed the importance of such initiatives in strengthening local ties and providing essential savings to families.
