Assistant Commissioner Louisa Rolfe provided a significant update today on the distressing events that unfolded this morning in Hainault. Speaking from the scene, she reported a coordinated response involving the London Ambulance Service, London Fire Brigade, and Redbridge Council, following the horrifying attack that resulted in the death of a 14-year-old boy and injuries to two civilians and two police officers.

“Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of the 14-year-old boy who very sadly died at the scene. We will be there to provide every possible support to them and ensure we get them the answers they need,” said Assistant Commissioner Rolfe.

The 36-year-old suspect, now under arrest on suspicion of murder, is currently hospitalised due to injuries sustained when his van crashed into a building during the incident. Despite speculation about his past, initial checks have revealed no prior incidents involving him, although investigations continue.

“This was, and is, a fast-moving, complex incident and investigation, and it will take us some time to establish the facts. This will be our priority in the coming days,” Rolfe added.

With the suspect in custody, police are confident there is no further threat to the public. However, the community remains in shock, and a significant police presence will continue in the area to provide reassurance and safety.

“We are turning our focus to the wider community, and in particular how the incident has impacted young people. We’ve set up a team of local officers specifically to respond to local community concerns,” stated Rolfe.

The police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant information to come forward. Rolfe also urged the public to be considerate of what they share online, especially graphic images that could further distress affected families and individuals.

As the community reels from this tragedy, Essex Online will continue to provide updates and support information as it becomes available.
