Ingredients:

For the Filling:

  • 1 kilogram lean ground lamb or beef
  • 2 onions, finely chopped
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 400 grams canned chopped tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 400 milliliters beef or vegetable broth
  • 150 grams frozen peas
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

For the Mashed Potato Topping:

  • 1.5 kilograms potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 100 milliliters milk
  • 50 grams butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Grated cheese for topping (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Start by making the mashed potato topping. Place the peeled and chopped potatoes in a large pot of salted water. Bring to a boil and cook until the potatoes are tender (about 15-20 minutes). Drain them and return them to the pot.
  2. Mash the potatoes with a potato masher or use a potato ricer for a smoother texture. Add the milk, butter, salt, and pepper to the potatoes and mash or beat until the mixture is smooth and creamy. Set aside.
  3. In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Add the chopped onions and cook for about 5 minutes until they become translucent.
  4. Add the ground lamb or beef to the skillet and cook until it’s browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks.
  5. Stir in the diced carrots and minced garlic, cooking for an additional 2-3 minutes.
  6. Sprinkle the flour over the meat and vegetables, stirring to combine. Cook for 1-2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
  7. Add the tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, canned chopped tomatoes, and beef or vegetable broth. Stir well and bring to a simmer. Let it simmer for 10-15 minutes until the sauce thickens and the vegetables are tender.
  8. Stir in the frozen peas and cook for an additional 2 minutes. Season the mixture with salt and pepper to taste.
  9. Preheat your oven to 200°C (180°C fan or 400°F).
  10. Transfer the meat and vegetable mixture to a large ovenproof dish. Spread the mashed potatoes evenly on top, and if desired, sprinkle with grated cheese.
  11. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
  12. Serve the Shepherd’s Pie hot, portioned onto plates, and enjoy your delicious, comforting British classic!

This Shepherd’s Pie is a wholesome and hearty dish, perfect for chilly evenings.
