Workers at Asda’s Wisbech store are set to participate in a crucial ballot in response to grievances including cuts in hours, alleged management bullying, and other workplace concerns. Over 150 members of the GMB union at the Asda Wisbech branch have initiated this vote, which encompasses a range of issues such as insufficient training and support, the protracted nature of their equal pay claim, and perceived negligence towards health, safety, and fire safety protocols.

The consultative ballot, which opened Friday 26 January, and runs until 9 February, will determine the workers’ stance on potential industrial action. Should the outcome indicate readiness for such action, GMB plans to launch a full strike ballot shortly thereafter.

This move follows a similar course of action by more than 100 GMB members at Asda’s Gosport superstore last month, marking the first-ever vote of its kind in the store’s history. The proposed strike at Gosport was subsequently suspended following last-minute negotiations, which are currently ongoing.

“ASDA has lost its leadership, its direction and no longer values its colleagues. The current state of the company is dire. Workers suffer slashed hours, a non-existent training programme, bullying management, a total disregard and lack of understanding for H&S and Fire Safety, and near to no negotiation with GMB. Most companies would be concerned when up to 4,000 separate fire safety and health and safety breaches were reported – Asda seems to be in denial. Blocked fire exits, blocked fire routes, blocked fire extinguishers and faulty fire alarm systems are routinely seen in ASDA Stores. GMB members at Wisbech are fed up and demand action. GMB will make sure their voice is heard or ASDA Wisbech could be facing a full strike vote.” – Keith Dixon, GMB Regional Organiser

The situation at Asda Wisbech represents a significant labor relations challenge, reflecting broader concerns over workplace conditions and employee treatment. The outcomes of these ballots and ongoing discussions could have far-reaching implications for Asda’s operations and employee relations.
